Prediction markets went from a niche for political forecasters to a mainstream way to put money on sports in about a year. If you're here because Kalshi or Polymarket is taking more of your money or your attention than you planned, this is a plain answer to two questions: is it gambling, and how do you get it off your phone?

What prediction markets are

A prediction market sells contracts on whether something will happen: a team wins, a candidate is elected, a number comes in above a line. A "yes" contract pays $1 if the event happens and nothing if it doesn't. The price moves between a few cents and 99 cents as people buy and sell, so the price reads like a probability.

  • Kalshi is regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) as a federally registered exchange. Sports contracts have become a large part of its business, and it is available in many states where sportsbooks are not legal.
  • Polymarket runs on crypto. It blocked US users for years after a 2022 settlement with the CFTC, then bought a CFTC-licensed exchange in 2025 to come back to the US market.
  • Others are arriving fast. Some brokerage apps offer event contracts next to stocks, and sportsbook and fantasy companies have launched prediction products of their own.

So, is it gambling?

Legally, it's contested. Federal regulators treat these contracts as financial products under commodities law. Many state gaming regulators say a contract on a football game is a sports bet by another name, and several states have sent cease-and-desist letters or gone to court. Courts have reached different answers, and the cases are still moving as of this writing. We can't tell you how it will end, and nothing here is legal advice.

Practically, for you, the label matters less than the experience. You put money on an uncertain outcome. You can do it at any hour, from your phone, during the game, as often as you like. Prices move live, and the app tells you when they do. If that pattern is costing you money, sleep or honesty with people you love, it is doing what betting does, whatever the regulator calls it.

One thing worth naming: "it's trading, not betting" can make it easier to keep going, because it sounds like investing. Some useful questions, asked without judgment:

  • Do you place more after a loss to get it back?
  • Do you check prices during work, meals or time with family?
  • Have you moved money from savings, or borrowed, to fund the account?
  • Would you be uncomfortable showing your partner the history?

A yes to any of those doesn't make you anything. It just means a guardrail might help.

Why prediction markets slip past most blockers

  • They're new. Many blocklists were built around sportsbooks and casinos and haven't caught up.
  • They're often filed under finance. An app's age rating depends on how it's classified, so an age limit in Screen Time may not hide a prediction-market app. Check the rating on its App Store page.
  • They live inside other apps. When event contracts sit inside a brokerage app, you can't block one tab without blocking the whole app.
  • They're legal where sportsbooks aren't. In a state without legal sports betting, a prediction market may be the only regulated way to bet on a game, which makes it the obvious place to go.

How to block Kalshi and Polymarket on iPhone

  1. Withdraw your balance first, so money in the account isn't a reason to unlock later.
  2. Block the apps by name. Settings > Screen Time > App Limits > Add Limit. Pick Kalshi, Polymarket and any similar app, set 1 minute and turn on Block at End of Limit.
  3. Block the websites. Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Web Content > Limit Adult Websites, then add kalshi.com and polymarket.com under Never Allow.
  4. Deal with the brokerage question. If event contracts are inside an app you also use for long-term investing, look in its settings or ask its support whether the feature can be switched off on your account. If it can't, consider moving long-term investing somewhere that doesn't sell event contracts, then block the old app.
  5. Think about crypto. Polymarket is funded with crypto. If a crypto exchange or wallet app is how money gets there, it may belong behind the block too.
  6. Let someone else hold the Screen Time passcode. Without that, everything above can be undone in a minute. Here's how a helper sets it.

Where Winner's Win fits

Prediction markets and event-contract sites are a category on the Winner's Win block list, alongside sportsbooks, casinos, pick'em and sweepstakes sites. That's 340,000+ gambling sites in every browser, with rules that catch new addresses. The apps you pick are shielded with Screen Time. Up to four people you trust hold the key: they're told if protection is switched off, and nothing unlocks unless they all agree.

It doesn't block one feature inside a bigger app, and it won't block a brokerage you didn't pick. We'd rather say that here than have you find out later.

Plans and prices are on our pricing section. Your helpers never pay. If your subscription ends, blocking stops.

Questions

Are Kalshi and Polymarket legal in my state?

It depends, and it's changing. Kalshi operates under federal CFTC regulation, while several states argue its sports contracts are unlicensed sports betting and have challenged it in court. Check your state's gaming regulator for the current position. This isn't legal advice.

Can Winner's Win block event contracts inside a brokerage app without blocking the whole app?

No. Winner's Win blocks gambling websites and shields whole apps you pick. It can't switch off one feature inside an app. Ask the brokerage whether event contracts can be turned off on your account.

Is trading prediction markets the same as investing?

Not in the way most people mean. A contract on a game settles within hours at $1 or nothing. If you're adding money after losses or hiding the history, treat it the way you would treat betting.
