How to stop betting on your phone at night
If you need to talk to someone tonight: call 1-800-GAMBLER or text 800GAM. Confidential, 24/7, for families too. In a crisis, call or text 988.
For many people, the worst hour is not during the day. It is late, with the lights off, a game on somewhere, and a phone in hand. If that sounds like you, you are in good company, and there are simple things that help.
Why late night is the risky hour
You are tired, so willpower is low. You are alone, so nobody sees. Live lines and late games keep offering new chances. None of that is a character flaw. It is the conditions.
Remove the always-on access
The less often a bet is one tap away, the fewer impulse bets there are. Shift from relying on yourself in the moment to setting things up in the daytime, when you are clear-headed.
Delete apps or lock them?
Deleting is a good first step. Locking goes further: a Screen Time block that someone else holds the passcode for. Here are the steps for betting apps.
Schedule your phone
Screen Time has Downtime, which limits the phone to chosen apps during set hours, such as 10pm to 7am. Add the calls and messages you do need, and leave the rest off. Again, the passcode matters most.
A bedroom without the phone
Charge your phone across the room, or in another room, with a cheap alarm clock by the bed. Getting up to reach it gives you a pause, and a pause is often enough.
Tell one person
Pick someone who will not lecture. Tell them late nights are the hard part. If they can hold the passcode or just get a text if protection is switched off, that is plenty.
What a lock can and can't do
A lock stops the easy bet. It does not remove the urge, and a determined person can use another device. Use it alongside support, not instead of it.
If a night turns heavy, call or text 988 or 1-800-GAMBLER. Both are open every hour.

Questions
Why is betting at night so hard to resist?
You are tired, alone and bored, your guard is down, and the app is one tap away. Late games and live lines make it worse.
Is deleting the apps enough?
It slows you down, but you can reinstall in a minute. A lock someone else holds works better.
What if I bet from the couch, not the bed?
Same fix. Take away the always-on access for the hours you are most at risk.
