Betting is closer to young people than it used to be. It sits inside sports apps, group chats and campus life. If you are worried about a teen or college student, you are not overreacting by paying attention. This guide covers what is common, how to talk about it and what tools may help.

What is common

  • Parlays on a weekend slate, sent around in group chats.
  • Fantasy and pick'em contests, which feel like sports talk.
  • Apps and promo codes passed from friends, sometimes on a borrowed account.
  • Social and sweepstakes casino games that look like harmless games.

Age rules

Age rules differ by state and product, and some apps do not check carefully. Do not assume a rule means your teen is safe. The best protection is a conversation.

Talking without punishing

  1. Start with curiosity: "I have noticed more betting talk lately. What is it like?"
  2. Listen first. Teens speak up when they do not expect a lecture.
  3. Share facts without fear: money, time and mood can all be hurt.
  4. Agree on a next step together.

This guide has more on the first conversation.

Screen Time for a child versus an adult child

For a minor, you can set a Screen Time passcode on their phone through Family Sharing, and limit apps and downloads. For an adult college student, it is their choice. Offer the option, explain why, and let them decide who holds the code. Here are the steps.

Campus resources

Most colleges have counseling services, and many have wellness pages that mention gambling. Look up your school's counseling center and ask about confidential support.

Questions

What do age rules say?

Rules vary by state, product and app. Many sportsbooks and casinos require you to be 21, some 18. Check the rules of the app and your state.

Should I read my teen's phone?

Be open about any plan to check. Hidden checking often backfires. Agree on the rules together where you can.

Can I use Screen Time on a college student?

With their agreement, yes. An adult child can choose to share a passcode with you or with someone else they trust. Without agreement, it is their phone.
