Prediction markets, sweepstakes casinos and "not real gambling" apps

Some apps say they are not gambling. They call themselves a market, a sweepstakes, a game of skill or a social casino. If you are trying to cut back, the label matters less than the experience. Does it ask you to put money on an uncertain result? Does it keep you coming back? This page explains how the rules differ and how to judge for yourself.
How regulators and states differ
There is no single national answer. Some states have banned sweepstakes casinos by statute. In others, regulators have sent cease-and-desist letters or taken court action, and in the rest the question is still open. Prediction markets are in a similar spot: regulators and courts in several states have taken action, with different results, and federal appeals courts have not agreed with each other. We cannot tell you what is legal where you live. Your state gaming regulator can.

- Social casinos: games with no cash out. These can still be a pull for some people.
A plain test
Ask three questions. Is there money going in? Is the result uncertain? Do I feel the same pull as with a sportsbook? If yes to all three, it is wise to treat it as betting, whatever the label.
Why Winner's Win blocks them
Winner's Win blocks prediction markets, sweepstakes casinos, pick'em and daily fantasy wherever you are, because the risk is about how they feel and what they cost, not what a court has said this month. Social casinos are not on the list. Some trading apps now sell event contracts inside the same app as stocks or crypto. A block cannot separate the two, so the app's checklist lists those apps as optional: shielding one blocks the whole app, and you and your circle decide.
Whatever the legal answer, if one of these apps is costing you more than you planned, help is available. Call or text 1-800-GAMBLER, or 988 in a crisis.
Winner's Win is an iPhone app that puts people you trust in charge of the key. Your helpers never need the app.
Questions
Are prediction markets gambling?
It depends on who you ask and where you live. Federal and state regulators and courts have disagreed, and several states have taken action. If you are putting money on an outcome and it is costing you, treat it like betting.
Are sweepstakes casinos legal where I live?
We cannot tell you. Nine states ban them by statute, a tenth ban starts in November 2026, and many others have taken regulator action, and the situation changes often. Check your state regulator.
Why does Winner's Win block them anyway?
Because an app that looks and works like a casino carries the same risks, whatever the law says.
