If someone you love is betting too much, you may have rehearsed this talk a hundred times and still dread it. There is no perfect script. There are a few simple habits that make it go better, and you can use them even if the first try is clumsy.

The first ten minutes

Keep it short. Say what you have noticed, say that you care, and ask one question. Then listen. You do not need to settle everything in one sitting.

Phrases that help

  • "I have noticed you seem stressed about money lately. I am on your side."
  • "I am not here to judge. I want to understand what is going on."
  • "What would make this easier for you?"
  • "If you want, I can help with the phone settings. You choose."

Phrases that backfire

  • "How could you be so stupid?" Shame makes people hide.
  • "You always do this." Big words invite a fight.
  • "Just stop." If it were that easy, they would have.
  • Threats you do not mean to keep.

When to talk

Not right after a loss, when the person is raw, and not during a game, when they are distracted. Mid-morning on a quiet day tends to be better than late at night.

What to offer

Offer things you can actually do: listen, go to a first counseling visit, sit down together and look at the statement, or hold a passcode so settings cannot be changed on impulse. This longer guide covers each of those and this one shows how the passcode works.

One text, then space

After a hard talk, send one kind text, such as "I love you. No rush. I am here." Then give space. Repeated messages feel like pressure. One message, then space, keeps the door open.

When to bring in a counselor

If money is going missing, if there is talk of hurting themselves, or if the same pattern keeps returning, a trained counselor can help both of you. Call 1-800-GAMBLER to be pointed to local help. If you are worried about someone's safety, call or text 988.

Questions

When is the best time to bring it up?

Pick a calm, private moment, not right after a loss or in the middle of a game. A walk or a drive often works.

What if they get angry?

Anger is common and does not mean you were wrong to speak. Stop, say you care, and leave the door open. One text later, then space.

Should I take over their money?

Only if they agree. Control without consent usually backfires. Offer help, like a shared look at the budget, and let them choose.
